FAQ
From Fluxbuntu Knowledge Center
Fluxbuntu
What is Fluxbuntu?
- Fluxbuntu is an LPAE (Lightweight, Productive, Agile, Efficient) compliant distribution based on Ubuntu. We've chosen Ubuntu for reasons of compatibility, but strive to empower all the legacy machines left behind.
Minimum Specs?
- Fluxbuntu uses 35-46mb of ram. If you have 64MB of ram we would definitely recommend having adequate swap space.
What makes Fluxbuntu different from Fluxbox + Ubuntu?
- Contrary to popular opinion, the Flux in fluxbuntu does not signify Fluxbox. The choice of window manager is coincidental. Fluxbuntu attempts to make sane application selection and daemon removal as well as providing a series of useful setup configurations and scripts. This includes items such as automounting, a resolution changing applet, and a few other additions to make your Fluxbuntu usage easier.
What the heck is going on? You guys suck! I failed my math midterms, my boyfriend left me, and my dad got sick while I was waiting for Fluxbuntu's version 1.0 release!
- Releasing a full-fledged distribution disk is no small task. Being humans and of an extremely small development team, some errors were made -- both in judgement and technology. We are deeply sorry for any inconveniences this may have caused you, your family, your pets, your significant others, and anything / anyone that we may have adversely affected. Trying to synchronize delivering a website, a wiki, and the disk images is no small feat for such a small team. We were trying to cook you a five course meal, and in the frenzy, some of the plates were delivered cold.
Why all the fuss about a non-existent distro?
- This probably speaks to the need of an Ubuntu-based distribution for legacy systems. Prior to our official version 1.0 release, there have been several builds available for download. There has been a Feisty beta release and multiple complete developmental releases during Dapper.
Installation
What size is the ISO disk image?
- The current installer disc and previous livecds have been approximately 300 megabytes.
What size is Fluxbuntu when installed?
- Once installed, Fluxbuntu will occupy 1.3 GB of disk space. This size will vary slightly due to the drivers and localisation that we try to include for maximum compatibility. For future releases we plan to supply KDrive as default with Xorg as an option.
What Arches are supported?
- x86 (i386), x86_64, and PPC builds are planned.
Will I be able to install Fluxbuntu from a CLI install or try it out from an existing one?
- A fluxbuntu-desktop package suitable for such purposes is planned for the full release. However, we are currently on the RC (Release Candidate) version.
Whats with the openoffice download and lack of internationalisation?
- OpenOffice is a hard coded dependency we are working to get rid of. Internationalisation will be available when Fluxbuntu is out of RC.
Browser
Why Kazehakase?
- Kazehakase is a browser we've chosen because Firefox has started to drift out of scope with our LPAE standards goals.
What can it do?
- Kazehakase is a full featured browser, with an interface that we've left as incredibly light. The version of Kazehakase included in Fluxbuntu uses the Gecko engine, the same engine powering Firefox. We have supplied User Agent Masking to make sure our users do not encounter any "incompatiblities". However, since this browser is not Firefox, you will not be able to use Firefox addons in Kazehakase, including ad prevention plugins. However, there are better browser-less solutions, including using the /etc/hosts file and external solutions such as privoxy and adzapper.
